Winter is on the way, and while it’s the season for hot cocoa and cozy blankets, our plants need a little extra help to feel at home. Just like us, they sense the seasonal shift – shorter days, cooler air, and, for many of them, a sort of “plant nap” as they go dormant. So, let’s dive into some easy winter plant-care tips to keep your green babies thriving until spring!
Let There Be Light – Finding the Right Spot
With the days getting shorter, natural light can be a little tricky. It’s no secret that most houseplants crave sunlight, but winter often leaves them searching for those rays. Moving your plants closer to a window can help, but be mindful of cold drafts – no one likes a chilly breeze!
South-facing windows are ideal if you have them, as they tend to get the most sunlight. And if you’re in a low-light home, consider adding a grow light to brighten things up a bit. It’s a small investment that your plants will thank you for!
Why this matters: Light is a plant’s best friend, especially in winter. By maximizing their light, you’re giving them the energy to stay healthy and happy, which makes for an even more vibrant indoor space.
Adjusting Watering: Less Is More
During winter, most plants naturally slow down their growth, which means they’re not as thirsty as they are in the warmer months. Overwatering can quickly become a problem, so check the soil before you reach for the watering can. If the top inch or so is dry, it’s usually safe to water; otherwise, give it a few more days. I always like to think of winter watering as a little “pause” – just enough to keep the roots happy but not overwhelmed.
Why this works: Less water prevents root rot, a common issue in winter when soil takes longer to dry. Remember, it’s easier to add a little water than to deal with a soggy, sad plant!
Boosting Humidity – Adding a Little Moisture to the Air
Between heaters and drier air, indoor humidity levels drop fast in the winter months. Many houseplants, especially tropical ones, love humidity, so they’re likely feeling a little parched. But don’t worry! You can give them that extra “spa day” feeling by adding a humidifier nearby or misting them occasionally. Grouping plants together also helps, as they naturally create a little micro-environment that’s higher in humidity.
Personally, I’ve found that adding a pebble tray under a few of my tropical plants works wonders. Plus, it looks cute – like a mini zen garden for them to enjoy!
Why it’s worth it: A bit of humidity can prevent leaf tips from turning brown and keep your plant’s foliage looking lush. Plus, it brings a nice touch of freshness to your indoor air, too.
Temperature Control – Keeping It Cozy
Most houseplants do well in temperatures between 65-75°F, but they don’t appreciate cold drafts or extreme changes in temperature. If your plants are near doors or windows that open frequently, try moving them to a spot with a more stable climate.
I like to think of it as creating a “comfy corner” for my plants, away from those drafty spots. After all, if it’s too chilly for us, it’s probably too chilly for them too!
Why it matters: A consistent temperature prevents stress, which means happier, healthier plants. And let’s be honest – we all enjoy a cozy home, including our plants.
Embracing Dormancy – The Season of Rest
Finally, remember that winter is a time of rest for many plants. Don’t stress if your plants aren’t growing as fast or if they seem a bit more “chill” than usual. This dormant period is completely natural. Think of it as their way of conserving energy for a big burst of growth come spring. For me, it’s a reminder that, like plants, we all benefit from a little downtime.
Why it’s okay: Dormancy is nature’s way of giving plants a break, so they can come back stronger. Embrace this season of rest with them, and let them take it easy.
Final Thoughts: Cozy Winter, Happy Plants
Taking care of your plants in winter might seem a bit different, but it’s actually a beautiful way to connect with them. It’s a reminder to slow down, pay attention, and create a warm, welcoming space for all of us. So this winter, as you wrap up in your favorite blanket, give a little extra care to your green friends. They’ll be right there with you, bringing life and vibrance to even the coldest days.
